A groundbreaking land‑based smolt facility developed for large‑scale production, high biosecurity, and efficient use of resources.
SalMar has entered into an agreement with Consto and Pure Salmon Kaldnes to build a new land‑based smolt facility at Tjuin in Malm, Steinkjer municipality. The facility will cover approximately 17,000 m² and reach an annual capacity of around 20 million smolt. As a result, it will become the world’s largest smolt facility.
The facility is designed to produce smolt grown to approximately 350 grams, while SalMar also evaluates further expansions. These future phases could enable production of fish weighing up to 500–650 grams. Therefore, the project forms a key part of the company’s long‑term strategy. It aims to increase operational control, ensure high biosecurity, and support efficient early‑stage production.
Before construction, Pure Salmon Kaldnes, SalMar, and Consto completed a collaborative planning phase in 2021. During this phase, the teams focused on optimizing design, technical solutions, and project execution. Construction was scheduled to begin in May 2021, and the Tjuin facility therefore represents an important milestone in land‑based smolt production.
SIMONA Stadpipe holds a contract with Pure Salmon Kaldnes covering engineering, production, delivery, and installation of complete piping systems. Approximately 95% of the pipes and fittings are manufactured in PE100, while custom‑engineered special products complement the solution. As a result, the system handles large water volumes, supports continuous operation, and delivers long service life.
